About

Northwestern researchers already collaborate extensively with community organizations, government agencies, schools, health systems and civic institutions. The Center for Community-Engaged Research (CCER) builds on those relationships by connecting expertise and resources across the University and supporting partnerships over time.

Housed within Northwestern’s Office for Research, CCER works across disciplines and alongside existing centers, institutes and offices to strengthen collaboration across Evanston, Chicago and the broader region.

Why the Center Was Created

CCER grew out of a University-wide planning process informed by Northwestern’s schools and administrative units, earlier University initiatives, peer benchmarking and a multidisciplinary implementation committee. That process identified a shared opportunity: make existing expertise easier to find, address recurring barriers and provide coordinated support for community-engaged research.

The center will help connect established programs and partnerships, extend their reach and address shared needs that individual units may have difficulty meeting independently.

Our Mission

To strengthen community-engaged research through equitable, lasting partnerships that advance knowledge and address priorities jointly identified by community organizations and Northwestern researchers.

Building Our First Year

During its first year, CCER plans to offer seed grants for community-based organizations and Northwestern researchers to explore research ideas. It will also develop a clear entry point for community organizations seeking connections with Northwestern researchers, institutes and schools.
